What causes constipation in cats? What should we do?

When your pet cat has recently been feeling uneasy, nervous, screaming, loss of appetite, severe and possibly vomiting, or constipation, although constipation is not a serious disease, it is something that many cats experience. Symptoms, especially in kittens or older cats, are more likely to cause constipation, but if not taken seriously, it may lead to poisoning. The more difficult the treatment, the more serious the condition.

First of all, the cause of disease has the following three factors:

  1. Feeding and control: If you feed sexual food for a long time, lack of drinking water, eat hair and foreign objects, lack of exercise, as well as sudden changes in feed, environment and management factors, it may induce diseases.

  2. Diseases: Painful defecation diseases (such as rectal polyps, proctitis, rectal enlargement, tumors, anal abscesses, etc.) occur due to the loss of normal intention.

  3. Self-control: Diseases that hinder defecation (such as bone marrow dislocation, pelvic fractures and hind limb fractures, etc.) can cause constipation.

    Secondly, symptoms:

In the early stages, it is difficult for sick cats to defecate and eliminate a little dry mucus, or a little smelly loose stool. In the late stage of the disease, the sick cat will feel uncomfortable, try to infiltrate, cannot be easily eliminated, tighten and cry, and check the abdomen frequently. Then the appetite decreases or is eliminated, and the spirit becomes depressed. Some vomiting, obvious tenesmus, abdominal bulge, and intestinal gas.

  4. Adjustment:

If the cat's constipation is not too severe, it can be slowly managed through a normal diet. Simply put, it is to prepare food rich in dietary fiber, which not only stimulates the cat's intestinal peristalsis, but also allows the cat to defecate normally. Please note that at this time, the cat's diet should be on the list, and the food should be soft, easy to absorb and digest. Other irritating foods should not be eaten by cats.

If the cat's constipation is very serious, it is necessary to take the cat to the pet hospital for examination. Take some medicine if necessary, such as 5-30 grams of magnesium sulfate or 5-50 ml of liquid paraffin oil. Naturally, the use of these drugs must first gain veterinary approval. Parents should not use drugs to treat pet cats.

In addition, cat constipation can also be treated through enema and surgery. Enema regulation is more suitable for mild and simple constipation. Use 40-80 ml of warm soapy water, and use an enema to enter the intestines and the abdomen to press the hidden feces in the intestines to help the cat defecate. Surgical treatment is mainly targeted at severe constipation. Naturally, these "technical survival" parents cannot do it by themselves, whether it is enema therapy or surgical adjustment. We must remember to go to a professional pet hospital.

    Prevent conditioning
    1. Innovate diet. Change the cat's diet to lactic acid bacteria + novel apple + alfalfa grass/grass pellets. It can be used to compensate for high-fiber grasses such as Timothy. When drinking, add juice, whole milk powder, glucose or some cheese to the water. Stop feeding snacks.

  5. Physical adjustment. If your cat's constipation is severe, physical therapy should be included in the diet. Warm your hands with a hot towel, and then massage gently in a clockwise direction. I use my hands to feel that cats with more severe constipation can find the feces in the abdomen, gently and patiently push the feces toward the anus, and slowly along the direction of the rectum to massage the feces to the anus door, and continue to help. After extrusion, this will help with post-discharge recovery. Remember not to be violent or you may damage your cat's intestines.

When a cat is sick, we should stay with it by its side. This method can make it less anxious and irritable.
